Leepfrog Facilities Prepared for Midwest Flood of 2008IOWA CITY, IA -- During the weeks of June 8th and 15th, severe flooding struck many states in the Midwest, including Iowa. The majority of the state experienced some sort of flooding; both Cedar Rapids and Iowa City saw floods that overflowed even the 100-year flood plain and were declared federal disaster areas. Leepfrog's primary and backup data centers are both located well above even the 500-year flood plain, and prior to this event, Leepfrog planned for disruptions of utlities, including network connectivity and power. Leepfrog has on-site power generation, and multiple network connections with independent paths, even at the local loop level. At this time, the utilities have done an amazing job of maintaining service to our facilities, and we do not expect all of our network facilities to be taken down at the same time. Some facilities were threatened by the Iowa River; some by the Cedar River; and a third by the Des Moines River. While the Iowa River continues to rise and threatens our primary internet connection, our other connections are routed through geographic areas that appear to have weathered the storm well. At this point, the only network outage to our facility was on a tertiary line, caused when the Qwest building in Cedar Rapids was submerged; the outage had no impact on network services at Leepfrog. That line has been repaired and brought back into service, and we currently have all network links fully operational and are receiving power from Mid-American. Leepfrog will keep its clients notified and posted if the situation changes significantly. For further information, please contact either Wes Bachman or Lee Brintle at (319) 337-3877.
