Leepfrog Upgrades Data Center

Third redundant internet connection added

November 15, 2004

In an ongoing effort to be prepared for any contingency, Leepfrog has established a third internet connection for it data center. This back-up infrastructure has the capacity to handle all of Leepfrog's clients should other redundant systems become inoperable.

The resultant redundancy in internet carriers and connections will greatly improve the reliability of Leepfrog’s service for larger clients who use Leepfrog’s data center for mission critical tasks.

The new connection is through a microwave antenna called a Local Multipoint Distribution System (LMDS). The antenna is mounted on top of a communications tower at Leepfrog’s office and data-center. The LMDS is a reliable, wireless connection to the internet through Sprint via Liberty Communications in West Liberty.

While most data-centers, including Leepfrog, offer redundant links to the internet, they often times use only one carrier like Quest or Sprint. Leepfrog’s new connection gives provides a redundancy in connections and in carriers. So even if one carrier fails, which is extremely rare, Leepfrog’s clients will still be online.

As a result of Leepfrog’s upgrade the US department of Education, one of Leepfrog’s clients, will have added assurance that e-mail for FAFSA on the Web will be streamed out accurately and on time. FAFSA on the Web delivers 20 million e-mails per year through Leepfrog. The e-mails notify college-bound people of the status of their financial aid or financial aid applications.
