E-Mail Gives way to Instant Messaging

PEW Report Shows Teens Moving from E-mail to Instant Messaging!

October, 2006 - The future has moved on, and has left e-mail standing next to phone calls, “snail mail” and other conventional forms of communication reserved for formality.  As teens shift to Instant Messaging in force, so do the schools trying to recruit them. Two more schools, the University of South Dakota and Coe College, have joined in the ranks of schools making that very shift.  To make instant messaging a viable recruitment tool, they've implemented InstantRapport, Leepfrog's managed instant messenger.

The University of South Dakota recognizes that prospective students prefer to communicate via instant messaging and believes having that available for recruitment is crucial.  Jama Christopherson, Assistant Director of Admissions at USD says, “Our staff is excited to use InstantRapport as a new means of communicating with prospective students not just in our immediate area but from around the world.  It will be very helpful to us by connecting our campus with students we often would not have had contact with.”  InstantRapport will work anywhere for anyone with an Internet connection.

According to PEW’s report on “Teens and Technology”, (07/27/2005), “email is still a fixture in teens’ lives, but IM is preferred.”   Email has maintained its popularity among the young and the old but as technology changes, teenagers are reserving email to “talk to old people.”   75% of online teens use instant messaging with almost half of those using IM daily.  Even the adults are following the advancing popularity of instant messaging, 42% of online adults use the technology.

The Chronicle of Higher Education spoke with Brian Niles, who says, “colleges need to branch out and find new ways to connect with students. It's not that they don't read e-mail, it's that they have their own world, and you need to know how to reach them in that world."  That’s where InstantRapport, a managed instant messenger, comes in!

Instant Rapport is effective for both universities and private colleges, branching into the admissions, registrar and financial aid offices.   It’s not only for incoming students; it’s a great way to keep communication lines open with existing students and co-workers.  With each department using Instant Rapport, the easier communication becomes.  The product allows you to answer the instant messages that come to you and also to transfer those visitors to the appropriate department.  How often will the admissions office receive a call that needs to be transferred to the registrar’s office and vice versa?  It happens every day! Our product will ease your workload and allow you to transfer visitors with a click of a button.
